Sashes: Traditional Cherokee Sash

TRADITIONAL SASH III – Traditional Beaded Sash by Martha Berry

Size: Approx. 50”H x 4”W x 1/4”D, plus silk ties

Materials: Glass beads on wool stroud, silk ribbon. To the extent possible, all materials are authentic to the early 19th century.

Like all pre-1840 Southeastern Woodlands sashes, this sash includes pre-European contact Mississippian pottery symbols. The symbols, the materials, and the bead color are all typical of those beautiful old sashes.

In addition, the beading techniques are peculiar to the pre-1840 Cherokee sashes. Those techniques include two-needle appliqué, two-bead flat stitch and two-bead edging.
